This is a full-time position in a specialized practice of a consulting & design firm that focuses on simplifying complex customer communications (sales, marketing and functional service communications). You will support senior consultants and information designers on innovative high profile projects for Fortune 500 firms.
The successful implementation of simplified customer communications is dependent on various aspects of technology such as data readiness, content management systems, print-on-demand document composition engines and print/online distribution methods. A clear understanding of operational and technology capabilities and limitations is vital to each project in order to ensure a seamless hand-off to implementation teams.
This position will be responsible for work in three major areas:
1. Front-end technology assessment
Technology assessment: While grasping business and project objectives you will research current operational and technology capabilities and limitations, explore possible alternatives and summarize findings detailing the technological limitations required for information designers.
Business process and financial impact: Some designs drive deep change across the client organization and business process. Examples include: the elimination of forms, new workflows, elimination of preprinted stock and warehousing operations. In each of these cases there is an impact on business process and the financial cost of operating that process. In this area of work you will be asked to conduct research and document process impact analysis and financial impact analysis.
2. Technical guidance during strategy and design phases
Proof of concept programming: In some cases, our clients ask us to begin some programming, as a proof of concept, to ensure that our designs are indeed feasible. Your role will be to identify appropriate trusted programming partners and work side-by-side with the programmers to complete the proof of concept, and then to write up a summary of findings and recommendations.
Output (e.g., print, Web, direct mail) specifications and requirements: Before creating our design, we will ask you to document detailed output specifications and requirements for designers to use. For example, printing details may include dimensions of margins, placement of bar codes, trim and paper measurements, tolerances due to paper stretch and print, folding and inserting equipment variations.
Technology recommendations and guidance: You will be responsible for providing guidance and recommendations to clients on a broad range of technology. A firm foundation in technology will be needed to research areas that are not already part of your expertise. Guidance will not be limited to pure technology, but how the technology may impact the business. Additionally you may be asked to manage vendor bid and selection processes as well as manage subcontracted vendors for the client.
3. Back-end technology implementation
Coordination: Following design completion you will work with and organize appropriate technology groups to ensure a seamless transition from design to implementation. This may involve the documentation of business rules, data field catalogues, and print specifications and functional requirements.
Writing business rules and print logic conditions: Depending on the form and function of the communications design, you may need to write detailed business rule and print logic conditions. For Web applications, the appropriate documentation will also have to be created.
Print specs: The definition of print specs may vary for different clients and print vendors. You will be responsible for researching the requirements, tolerances, manufacturing processes, and to coordinate the translation of our designs into terms usable by the print and technology vendors.
Programming: In some cases, the client may ask us to continue proof of concept programming into full implementation programming. This means you will be responsible for working with programmers and managing the project through full implementation.
Additional job requirements:
The successful candidate will have the following background experience:
• 8-10 years of overall business and technical experience
• 3+ years producing and writing detailed functional requirements
• Experience in analyzing business requirements and translating them into technical specifications
• Broad knowledge of current Web application servers, document workflow management/publishing systems and/or CMS platforms
• A working knowledge of relational databases and relationships with interactive platforms
Knowledge of, or experience in, one or more of the following is a plus:
• Variable document composition systems (e.g., Exstream Dialogue, Document Sciences)
• Enterprise and Web content management systems (e.g., Documentum, Vignette, Interwoven)
• Enterprise CRM systems (e.g., Siebel)
• Hands-on coding experience with web-based enterprise software application integration and/or development
• Data-driven, variable print documents (e.g., financial statements)
• Experience in financial services or health care industry sectors
• Experience on the consulting-side of relationships with Fortune 500 firms
